A hole in the floor of heaven

I wish things would just happen and leave out the suspense and the build up and what not, you know?! Or just leave me out of it anyway. No, this is not leading to a specific incident related rant of any kind. Or any rant actually.A bunch of stuff's happened since I last hung out my thoughts to dry out here. I've been on a boat ride where I wasn't driving, for a change, and subsequently got very very wet. Then there was that little excursion to the back-deck. Which, though I ranted and raved about a fair bit, went quite peacefully. (Now we'll have to wait and see if I've just totally screwed it up for the rest of the trip or not.)
Fantasy football for the season is over, and I've finished with a very respectable 15th in the league. And guess what? I did sweet f***-all with my team for like 90% of the time >:)))). And of course now I'm rubbing it in the faces of all those who still claim that 'strategy' has anything to do with it :P.
Finally the F1 season's brought home something to write about. Ferrari's managed a podium, and Braun might just be feeling an outside hint of some pressure. Of course the fact the McLaren and Hamilton are languishing has been some source of joy, but not a whole lot. Hate all the drama over threats of pulling out of next year's championships and what not though! Then of course there was last night's thrashing of ManU by Barca :). Oh man! It was way out of my waking schedule, but I actually managed to wake up to the alarm... Just never made it out of my bunk :P. Oh well, I'm not sure why I'm this happy about it though, but I am :D.Oh! There's another TT tournament happening on the boat this trip :). So yeah, there's quite a lot of stuff going on. And then there's that other thing. As usual, all the caveats and ifs and maybes apply. But, if everything goes through, I should remember yesterday as the day the ball started rolling :). Maybe the latter half of this year will take an entirely unexpected turn :). We shall see. In the mean time, I'm really looking forward to leaving the boat early (compared to the majority of the rest of the crew) for the first time since my first-ever trip, back up in the Sea of Okhotsk, what now feels like a lifetime ago...

Currently: all kinds of hopeful :)

Or not..

Well, I did get on the boat quite alright. Perfect helo weather and all. Minus my bag. But the bag story is far from over :|. So I got to the boat, right, with a little bag of the bare necessities (which, it turns out, aren't all that much :|) stuffed into an extra backpack that another late joiner to the boat just happened to be carrying :D, and called up the baggage people at the airport, fully expecting a request to fill out their claim form. Instead, I was told that my bag had arrived, and had been sent to the hotel! Probably an hour before, or after I left. I still haven't been able to establish which :|.

And after a week, and another late joiner travelling through the same hotel, and promises that my bag would be with me by the end of the week at the very latest, I still don't have it. That was 4 days back. Now I can only hope that it is in fact still at the hotel, hopefully, intact. As for the rest, I can quite clearly say, thus far, I'm only really missing my flip-flops :).
--

Right, gloating time :P. I was actually quite sure there would be no Fantasy posts this season. But obviously, when earlier in the day the last games of the opening week were done, and I saw the league listings.. :D. It may only be the first week and what not, but I'm on top!! And by a hefty margin too! :))

Getting uncomfortably close to that landmark I've always felt ambivalently about... That doesn't really narrow things down now, does it? :) Well, we'll get there when we get there.

Ups and downs

:) Oh boy.

So I'm back home, and by the time I got here the eye was back to relatively normal dimensions. Close enough so you wouldn't notice anyway. Of course it's not like it hadn't had enough time :|. Anyhoo. It was the usual summer Kolkata, hot humid, sticky and still. I was quickly reminded that this is the kind of heat I can take easily in my stride. Not the kind prevalent in the North West Shelf even close to winter, in the absence of wind :(.

The book thing is getting seriously addictive. But try as I might, I couldn't refrain from buying one in Changi :|. Having been genuinely impressed by one Hornby, I decided to go for another. High Fidelity. I think this one's been made into a movie as well, hasn't it? But I haven't seen it, so haven't the slightest clue about the plot :). Should be fun.

Had a very strange couple of flights back. Must have dozed off, can't remember most of either! As I said, very unusual. Must be why I woke up at the unheard of hour of 8:30 am yesterday! And then proceeded to spend the rest of the day wondering about it...

Anyway, so this morning I woke at a much more regular 10 o'clock and found a bomb waiting in my inbox. My Norwegian work permit's been granted, but. (Ah yes, the omnipresent but :(.) First I have to get an entry visa to Norway! I was like "What?!!!! And when where you people going to lemme know?!! Like after I got hauled off to jail or deported by immigration when I landed up?!!!"

Thankfully, NO immigration happen to know what they're doing, and within the first minute of my call to the embassy in Delhi they knew what I was on about. Which, given my state of mind was probably quite an admirable thing. And all I had to do over the rest of the day, was find the consulate in Kolkata, hand in my stuff and then get asked to sit around twiddling my thumbs for a week. Or ten days. They weren't specific. Now my flight out of here is exactly ten days from now, so it's definitely cutting it real fine :-<. Oh well, if not, there's always last minute delays extending my vacation :P.
--

Some readers may or may not have noticed how suddenly half way through the season my posts on Fantasy football disappeared :). That was right around the time we shot off on the Kiwi road trip, and the lack of attention over the busy Christmas period (that's my excuse anyway :D) saw my rank take a headlong plunge into the 30's (from the mid teens I think)! Now this weekend marked the end of the season, and some how or other, I'd managed to claw my way back up to 16th :D. And yes, at some point I did get Cristiano 'pretty boy' Ronaldo back. There really wasn't a choice :(. I figured what with the enthusiasm of the start, the thing deserved at least a mention at the end :). There's always next year :D.
--

Earlier this evening I was out for a bit of a walk for some reason or other. At some point, I noticed that I'd left my phone behind. The wind was picking up in sudden gusts, an almost definite precursor of sudden summer thunder showers we call kal-boishakhi's in these parts. Sure enough, not long afterwards the downpour began. God knows how long it's been since I've had this much fun out in this city. Or felt rain water this warm, relatively speaking of course. And probably the first time I've intentionally got drenched in the rain in years :).

Backdrifts

I really shouldn't be doing these flights where I land up at home in the morning :|. So another zombie day. And before I'd been home 24 hours I got my flights out that have me leaving bright and early on Sunday morning /:). And while we are at it, there's a 'super cyclone' headed for Kolkata even as we speak.

Finally got back to reading on the way back, and realised that it had been long enough for me to have completely lost the thread, so it was a restart of The Silmarillion. But before that I finally managed to locate the first A Song of Ice and Fire book in Perth airport! It's strange but somehow this one's never at the stores, and not just the ones in the airports. I've been looking for it for quite a long time now. At some point I did read about half of the book, but I think when I do get to it again, I'll have to start at the beginning :).The flights themselves weren't so bad, except that the choice of movies was terrible in the first one, and non-existent in the second one :|. Imagine a six-hour flight complete with in-seat screens, but no movies :-<. Beyond frustrating. Especially when you're practically waving to you final destination as you fly over it :|. Well, I couldn't see, I was in a middle seat, but I'm sure the Singapore - New Delhi flight went pretty much over the top of Kolkata. One thing I was very relieved to note was the internal transport arrangement within the IGI airport. Can't say the same about the number of times I got held up at check ins and immigration counters 'cos of trouble with my name on my new passport. (That's the one with the million errors and smudgy corrections :|.) I'd almost forgotten about the weekend's games in the rest of the week's excitement! I didn't do too badly actually, managed to stick on to my spot, albeit by a whisker :P. My luck with captains ran out, but there was enough scattered brilliance to keep me above quite a high average :).

This is gonna be really touch and go... I'm still half dead, and leaving the day after :(. Oh, and I have to be up at 5:30 and I'm still here :((.

Gameweek 12

If last week was fantastic, this week was out of this world!!!! I don't know how, but I managed an earth-shattering 77 points!!! Well, okay, so most of it was down to an astute captain selection :D. (I'm like so dying to gloat, but I'm not on the boat!!! Not that I'm dying to get back to the boat mind you.) Anyway, while most people went with the Lampards and the Ronaldos and the Fabregas(es?! :P), I went with my newly acquired Aston Villa defender, Laursen. You see, they were playing Derby, at home! The Derby that are yet to score a single away goal!! So a minimum of six points was a dead sure thing. And then he scored. They even gave him a couple of bonus points just to sweeten the deal \:D/!! To make things really spectacular, another three of my players scored! And two further clean sheets! Man, it really does not get a lot better than this. (Which, actually, is a bit of a concern, but we'll get to that as and when things start going southwards again :|.) But the absolute, absolute best part. I jumped almost 10 spots, and landed squarely back on 4th. Not just single digits, within the top five!!! Oh! Oh-ho-ho! Sweetness :D.

Picking up the pieces, again

Contrary to the previous post, a lot has happened over this weekend, and especially stuff that I would in fact want to write about! But. (There's always the but at the worst time, no?) My laptop's gone for a spin again. Almost exactly a year since the last major cock-up. This time though, it merely refuses to let me do anything with the net. X-((((((( Thankfully, that has done nothing to stop me from getting to my music... the small mercies. At least until they come along and haul it away to try and fix it again that is :|.
So anyway, crew-change! And yes, it was a very satisfying feeling to be getting off with the rest of the bunch :D. But not without a little bit of drama. The last day on the trip we had to spend sort of on the back deck, since we had to break off from the prospect and sail closer to land to get within chopper range. But when I went up to the helideck for the customary sunrise viewing, I was in for a major shock! The ship was pitching hard and the swell was bad enough for anyone to tell you there was no way in hell any chopper could land!!! So the last few hours we spent intensely worrying, till eventually the first chopper was due in a few minutes and some of us made our way up to the MOB standby station. Nothing unusual about that, only this time, we actually made sure everything was in proper order for a launch, just in case :|.

The first chopper appeared in due time, preceded by the roar of its twin turbo engines. I knew there was something funny when it hit the deck a lot quicker than I've ever seen before. Soon the deck was clear for the second one to land, we saw it make its turn, but then it just kept flying around in circles around the ship! The pilot was too afraid to land!!! And this was barely the second chopper! I was way down the list on the fourth!! Major panic!! Thankfully, after about a couple of circles the chap figured he could land :D. The next landing went without incident, only, there was still no one to relieve us so we could go get ready to leave :(! When I did get away, there was still a good half hour to the scheduled arrival of my helo, but I'd barely packed up my stuff and was just about to hit the shower when the PA blared out that our chopper was just about to land :|. And NO it didn't take me half an hour to pack!!! Oh well, good thing I'd packed before the intended shower eh?
We were all happily back in Perth when some very weird weather greeted us. I'd heard that the temperatures around midweek had been up in the 30s! Well, it was getting pretty close to summer anyway. But it was practically freezing when we got off the flight!! 14 degrees and raining /:).

The rest of the weekend...

Well, suddenly it was Monday morning, and it was arguably the worst case of M-m blues since like 1st grade in school :-<. (That was when I had the worst class teacher of my entire life :|.) And it was still cold enough for thick jackets. Decided to alleviate the walk to work by entertaining myself with the brand new GPS receiver we got over crew change! Only made me regret the lack of trekking opportunities in the last two and a half years. And then I got to the office, and discovered my latest device malfunction :|.
Oh well, at least I did quite fantastically in this weeks EPL games. And the best part was Tevez scoring twice! And of course, I had him as captain, so double points :D :D. I finally broke through 500 points and now I'm back up to 12th place, joint :P. Let's see how long I have to survive on friends' laptops. At least there are the friends this time :).

Interruptions

The last week onboard before crew-change is never the quickest, but this time, the days seem to be... well, not quite flying by, but at least trotting past at a fair pace. The way it stands now, it's just one more day and a wake-up! And if everything works out as planned, (Oh how I hate that phrase! It seems to attract disaster :-<.) this should be our last trip in Oz for a while. The Trident is headed for New Zealand over the summer (winter for those in the north :|). But, even though the boat will definitely get there by mid next month, there is a non-zero possibility of most of the crew not making it, thanks to the fantastic fiasco that the visa procurement process is all set to turn into /:). But after two years, you tend to give up on the worrying a bit.Durga Pujo came and went over the weekend. Well, it didn't quite get this far out to sea. But a few emails did :). I spent a good four years not particularly hating the fact that I was missing Pujo. Then I spent another two not particularly ecstatic over the fact that I wasn't. But this year there's a strange sense of a void. The really good part about this festival is the end. It's perfect for people like me, who keep forgetting dates, or (therefore) put great effort into reminders and stuff, only to then find themselves whisked off by circumstances that totally blow everything else out of their minds.. it's an endless blame game :P. But with Pujo, you technically have almost a full year (minus say, 15-20 days) to get around to wishing people :D. Okay, so the practical thing to do is to limit oneself to a month or so. But that still gives me another four weeks at least :D.

It's not that I don't try. Wishing Shubho Bijoya to everyone who understands what that means :).
Ah yes, EPL. I did disastrously. Really. Below the average, and way down the league in my lowest rank yet. But I couldn't get too depressed over it thanks to the F1 weekend! I'm still pretty kicked about it actually :D.

Oh, have been watching a few movies in the mean time. The only one that would actually deserve mention is Pirates 2. This is barely the second time I've seen it, and it felt like I'd never seen it at all!!!!! I did always say the circumstances were less than ideal for getting my head around something quite as complicated as that the first time :P. Bottom line, two is every bit as good as three :D.

I seem to have less of stuff that I really want to write about these days, and more of what the mind seems to fill up with instead....

Demon days

I don't really feel like writing about it, but I suppose an entire week must be accounted for in some way. I have one word for you, back-deck. Automatic associations may be made freely with disasters, depressingly long hours, the stench of rotting barnacles, frayed tempers, (and nerves,) plans gone awry, dull sunrises, nice ones almost missed despite them being in your face in a rather blindness inducing manner, cold nights, hot days, deja vu of the horrifying kind.... and many other such wonderful things that can make anyone go suicidal.

But, now that it's over, I'm very happy to find myself with only a fortnight to go till crew-change! That, unfortunately, means that I will miss watching the final F1 GP of the season at Interlagos next weekend live on TV :(. I hope it's a thriller though, given that the VSAT situation has improved enough to give me unparalleled access to the next best thing: F1 Live Timing! But I must say, at the end of the Shanghai GP, when Massa set successive fastest laps on the last three laps, I was almost screaming "WTF were you doing for the rest of the bloody race?!!!!!" :(( The one good thing that has happened over this F1 season is that I've come to accept Raikkonen as an absolute genius. I like Massa better, but 'the Iceman' is simply phenomenal!
EPL Gameweek 9 went by almost unnoticed as the stench of barnacles slowly but surely permeated the vessel, and another mediocre performance saw me slide back out of the top ten. But it looks somewhat promising from here on, I have quite a strong line-up for next week, let's see how that goes.

Just for the record, I'm really looking forward to the ship getting out of Aussie, even if only for a few months, and only as far as New Zealand!

Gameweek 8

The recovery continues, and I must say I am very relieved to remain static and within single digits in the league :). As is obvious from above, my defence did a splendid job this weekend! And Anelka scored again! The man is amazing, Bolton keep losing, but he somehow almost always manages to get a goal in! Well, I'm not a Bolton fan, so I'm not complaining :P. I also finally have a Liverpool player on my team, and for the first time got a clean sheet from a goalie! Only, now I'm seriously contemplating getting proper forward to substitute the injured Forssel, so I don't have to depend on Tevez so much. Especially when he seems to have been relegated to a second line striker with Rooney's comeback :|. But that will have to wait, for this week, I chose to get rid of Lampard before his price goes down any further.

Back already!

Yeah, shortest break I've had yet :-<. Barely felt like I was off the boat at all!! A fact that I was repeatedly and forcefully reminded of by both crews over crew change /:). But what was worse, it felt like I had barely been off the backdeck :((. Thankfully that was just one day, and now we're settling down for a hopefully uneventful trip (fingers tightly crossed :|).

Was quite an eventful weekend all in all. Firstly, night before I left home I was informed that yet another course of mine in Norway has now been cancelled. Yeah, and yet another one I had in the upcoming break has been provisionally moved. If that too gets cancelled, my super efficient packing will be rendered completely pointless, among other things. But I've decided to let go of such little things as disastrous side effects on my plans on break and meeting friends and the minor degree of control I had over my life, and just go with the flow.

There were no surprises on the flights, no delays. Watched the new Fantastic 4 movie, and found it quite entertaining. And watched Ocean's 13 (or parts thereof) on all three flights :P. The only book I have with me this time is my newly acquired personal copy of The Silmarillion, so I'm not going through it too quickly, gotto make it last more than a month at least :D.
In the meantime, I did spectacularly well in Fantasy Football! 65 points this week!! More than double what I got last week :D. Had been somewhat forced into buying Le Arse's Cesc Fabregas, and he promptly handed me 32 points :|. But more importantly, ending a long long wait, Tevez finally scored!!! So I'm now back into single digits, and although a certain disqualification related incident had something to do with that, I'm quite happy with the end result :D. Unfortunately, I'm now almost 50 points behind the league leader :-<.

It does get easier with time, the whole settling into the void thing.

Gameweek 6

The disastrous week is swiftly turning into a string of disastrous weeks :(. C. Ronaldo came back out of suspension and did absolutely fuck-all, except for earning himself a yellow card that is X-(. As a result I've dropped him from my team, way too late I suppose :(. The only silver lining is that he'd gone back up in price to 12 mill, so at least I didn't lose money, well, not directly. None of my buys in the entire season have done me any good yet. Except Tevez. And him only in the form of a couple of bonus points this week. :-< I was kinda getting used to the single digit ranks :(.

Gameweek 5

Disaster!!! That's what it was! :(( With just 41 points, I actually did worse than the overall average! And now I've dropped way back down in the league :-<. And that's not all, my star midfielder Lampard is injured. The real irony is that under normal circumstances I'd be happy to see Lampard injured, and Chelsea at the bottom of the league table /:). Then there's my star defender, Dunne, who's gone and gotten himself a red card, so he's not playing next week. Thankfully, C Ronaldo's back out of suspension. I just hope he finally does something to justify the 12 million price tag X-(.

Catharsis

It has been an I N S A N E five days. (No really, I cannot possibly impress upon you exactly how insane it has actually been, even with the capitalised, spaced out letters!) And to think that I was supposed to get off the boat on Friday. However, that fell through, and on Saturday morning one of our streamers (one of the eight 6km long cables with hydrophones, that we tow behind the ship to pick up sound signals) chose to dive to the ocean bottom. This particular ocean bottom in question was a good 1100m below the surface. Predictably, all hell broke loose.
That wrinkled up yellow thing you see floating in the water? That's not supposed to be wrinkled, it's supposed to look like a nicely rounded balloon. Well, sort of. And it has been crumpled and crushed into that huge hulk of scrap merely by water pressure at a great depth. Without going into too much detail, let's say that this was the worst stint on the back-deck that I've ever done.

Thankfully, there were a few people who made life a whole lot more bearable under the circumstances. And there were movies. But I must admit House of Sand and Fog wasn't the best choice under the circumstances. It has brilliant acting amidst equally brilliant cinematography, but is one of the most depressing movies I've ever seen! The only light moment came when the Russian workmate I was watching it with found it extremely hard to believe that she had a similar accent to Kingsley's representation of Southern Caspian English! It is rather difficult to keep a straight face when you hear someone say 'I don't talk like that' while talking exactly like 'that' :P.In between all of this Gameweek 4 came and went, and I did exceptionally well with 55 points. Way above the average of 41 this time! And with it, I landed a solid third spot!! The only trouble is, it will probably only get worse from here. Almost at the same time, F1 yielded the perfect result that I was looking for at Istanbul! A Ferrari 1-2 with Massa in front!! I think someone was trying to compensate for the kinda luck I was having with the more pressing matters at hand /:).

Eventually it was Tuesday afternoon and I was packing with the all important question still hanging unanswered like a dark cloud over my head. Will the weather calm down to permit a chopper to land on the Trident's helideck? And when I was just about through, I ran into the Chief Officer, who just happened to mention in passing that the helo ops would very probably get cancelled :O. I was aghast!!!! The option was to wait for a couple of days, and even after that, the weather was predicted to only get worse :((!! It is probably the worst possible thing that can happen to you, having to pack your bags without knowing if you would have to unpack everything again the next day.

I got on shift yesterday, and headed back to the backdeck, wondering if this would be the last time. Not the best thing to have on your mind when you are trying to concentrate :). By the time I got off at midday, all the gear was almost the way it was all supposed to be. A couple of hours later, I was in the heli-reception, waiting for my chopper. Another half hour, and I was actually on it :). I have, without a doubt, never been this happy, relieved, grateful or exhausted while lifting off from the Trident :-<. It took three flights, the chopper out to Barrow Island, then an ancient looking fixed wing (that looked like it had a flat tyre!) out to Karratha and then another jet to Perth to get back. And when I got out of the cab in Subi, I was still wondering if the keys I had in my hands would open the gate :|. (I hadn't been able to recognise the set I'd been sent.) But it turned out that my misery had run its course :). Got a really good night's sleep and took the day off today. The forecast was gloomy with possible hail, but it's been bright and sunny all day :).

In the end

All seven down! Argh. But not the worst, there's definitely been worse :). So I'm finally done with The Deathly Hallows! And really, the best part of it by far is the fact that it is finally all over for good :-<. Now I can happily go back to Life of Pi that has been left on hold for some time!

The first half of this book was much like the previous two, slow, irritating, hard to get through. But then it got better. There were parts that almost reminded me of the older books! But then I suppose some of it had been written earlier, but whatever. It was very weird :), all in all. I can't really make up my mind if I wanted this kind of an ending. But I suppose if anyone was looking for twists and turns, they weren't left disappointed. I am rather curious to know if this one can really be considered a 'children's book' though...
--
Okay, now a little bit of fantasy football! :D Gameweek three got done over the weekend, and my first real gamble paid off!! Before the games started, Downing, one of my midfielders was declared doubtful with an injury! But I figured might as well play him, and guess what? Got me 3 bonus points!! :D. Ended up with a single digit rank on our league for the first time \:D/ and now I'm only second on the boat!!

Gameweek 2

It does seem like there hasn't been much happening in my life lately doesn't it? Which is kind of true too... Let's see, since the last weekend I've gone driving in the boat a bit. Which was good. On one of those occasions, the maneuvering was so taxing that by the end of it my left arm was semi-numb with pain elbow up. Which wasn't so good. Though it did generate that purely physical (and a tad masochistic) sense of achievement... Then I got stuck on an MOB crew almost by mistake. No, not on standby, an actual drill! And once we were in the water, that's when I realized that I was the one supposed to be doing the driving!!! Not what one might ordinarily categorize as good, but was undoubtedly awesome fun :D. Then for the last couple of days there's been crane training. I'm supposed to get certified as a driver. I think I did too... though not entirely sure if the instructor's last nod was a 'yeah you've passed' or a 'yep, there's no way in hell I'll certify you' :|. But it was pretty interesting. Given that I've never gone anywhere near the crane driving stations ever before. The whole thing moves! As in you, your controls, the little landing thingie you're standing on, it's all actually turning with the boom of the crane :D. And it's high up, so it's nice and windy. The people down below look appropriately tiny, and you feel correspondingly high and mighty... The speed of the movements however, was decidedly short of even my modest expectations.

Right, so getting back to the point, EPL!! Fantasy football! (Yay.)Another bunch of games done with, and this time, I did better! Actually I got less points than last time, just 38, but the average was barely 25 \:D/. I suppose the red card awarded to C Ronaldo (I still refuse to call him just Ronaldo :|) had a fair bit to do with that. And I had Forssell on the bench, again. And he got five points, again :|. But, what has me really excited is that Tevez played!!! I didn't have him, but so what?! And, Berbatov very obligingly developed a groin injury, so I've promptly dumped him and picked Tevez :D. Perfect eh?! I know, I'll never make it too far in the league, these Argentinians will be the end of me. Let's see how long I resist the temptation of getting Mascherano and Heinze:|.

Gameweek 1

Yeah, there's gonna be one of these every now and then from now :D.So the English Premier League has kicked off and at the end of the first week we've got our points! For our teams on the Fantasy Football that is. Well, I haven't done too badly. My 42 points are marginally above the overall average of 39, and if I'd had one of my subs playing instead of on the bench, that would have been 6 points more :-<. But who would have thought Sunderland and Birmingham City players would be the pick of the lot! Oh well, there's 36 more weeks to go. I'm just trying not to get carried away and make too many wild transfers every week :|.

Glass arm shattering

Clarity lost? Or trapped? Enmeshed in a wilderness of fissures. (Arm?-)twisting sense to blindness. The culprit melts away in the newly descended darkness. Do you sense those teeth bared in a sneer? Lose yourself or move on. It isn't a matter of choice really.--

It's taken two seasons, but I've finally given into temptation and joined the nefarious world of Fantasy Football :D. I just put up my provisional team for the upcoming EPL season. The name (which has nothing to do with the band) is Lost Prophets, and I'm quite sure it will be proven apt before long :P.

Ah yes, a warning: do not watch The Lake House. Ever.
